• A note from THE ART ROOM

    Dear Parents and Caregivers,

I am very pleased to have your child in art class this year. I have attached a course syllabus to give
you an overview of the learning that will take place in the art room. I am excited to teach your child
beneficial skills and knowledge through art. I hope that your student will not only gain artistic and worldly
knowledge, but also enjoy learning in the art room. Please encourage all of your student’s artistic
endeavors. If I can be of any assistance to you or to your child please feel free to call me at the school.

    The art room Codes of Cooperation are in place to ensure the physical and emotional safety of your child;
please help your student to realize the importance of these essential agreements.

    Art Room Essential Agreements:

When in the art room (studio) art students are expected to behave like an ARTIST:

    Acts responsible
    Respects the teacher and classmates
    Talks in a quiet voice
    Is always listening and observing
    Stays in his/her own workspace
    Thinks art smart

**********Even when procedures are followed paint and other
materials may get on clothes. Please dress your child appropriately for
art day. (Students may bring an oversized shirt to pull over their school
clothes while they are in art. Please write your student’s name in this
shirt so it can be stored in his or her classroom.)******************

We will discuss the classroom expectations during art time. Please review these expectations with
your student to help him or her understand the importance of cooperation to ensure their safety and the
safety of others in the art room. I would like to thank you for your help and support. I am looking forward
to a fun, exciting, safe, and creative year.

    Art Education Purposes:

Elementary art provides students with experiences to learn how to communicate through art, develop skills in visual problem solving, as well as craftsmanship and technique. Art teaches students to appreciate historical and current purposes for the creation of art and its cultural diversities. Art encourages students to make connections to real-life and other subjects. Art stimulates the development of critical and creative thinking skills.

    Instructional Philosophy:

Teaching the curriculum of art is an ongoing process. The elements and principles of design, which are the basic building blocks of art, are introduced in kindergarten and reinforced and expanded upon as the student grows. Students will work individually on artwork guided by teacher demonstrations and visual examples and when beneficial to learning they will work in cooperative groups. Student assessment will be based on project objectives, self-critiques, participation, and questioning of students’ knowledge.  High quality work is expected.
