D7's Recommended Summer Reading Lists
The librarians of Spartanburg 7 have curated lists of recommended books and authors for your summer reading pleasure. The lists below are specifically tailored to each grade level to help you connect with books that are just right for your child.
D7 Libraries Recommended Summer Reading lists are adapted from other published book lists such as the South Carolina Book Awards List and the American Library Association Summer Reading Lists. Parents should review titles to determine their appropriateness for their children.
Titles that are available virtually from our Spartanburg County Public Libraries are annotated on each list.

Summer Reading = Key to Success
Students can lose up to three months of reading skills if they don't read at least 4-6 books over the summer!
The more access students have to books at an early age, the likelier they are to develop good reading habits and avoid the summer slide. The summer slide is the tendency for students to lose or forget skills over the summer that they learned during the previous school year. Children who don’t practice reading in the summer months risk falling behind by the time school begins again.
Through activities like summer reading camps and programs like Imagination Library, educators are helping to make sure children build and maintain vocabulary and other skills through reading.
It's a proven fact that Aaccess to books early on creates that interest and love for reading and learning that would certainly help students as they go through school.
Encourage summer reading with some of these tips:
- Take a trip to your local library.
- Read together at a local park, by the river, on the beach, or somewhere
- Schedule a family reading time, first thing in morning, after dinner, or before bed.
- Monitor Progress and provide incentives
- Plan rewards for completing certain milestones - after so many minutes read, consecutive days of reading, pages read, or books completed.
